Stand Up For Cider 2019 – Our 5th Birthday Year!

Stand Up For Cider 2019 – Heat One

Genius PR & Events is FIVE this year! Blimey!

So…. we shouldn’t have been surprised to realise that Stand Up For Cider is FIVE years old too!

This year we are being sponsored by Taunton Cider and Berry’s Coaches. We are so grateful for their support as it enables us to put on shows of such high quality! This in turn ensures our shows are full of laughter loving local people!

To celebrate turning five we have produced a new trophy! A mini oak Cider Barrel. Our thanks to Reor Design and Carly Press for printing it up for us.

Genius work closely with Tim O’Connor who is also a comedy promoter in North Somerset to whittle down all the applications and choose which acts appear in the heats. It can be a mammoth task! Tim also helps run the nights and we couldn’t do it without him. It is also useful for Tim to see these up and coming acts as we are both able to spot, nurture and help the really good ones progress up the comedy ladder. Our winner from 2017 went on to be on Britain’s Got Talent so this competition really is the place to see the talent of the future!

So, the 1st heat was held on Friday 25 January at the home of Stand Up For Cider The Creative Innovation Centre (CICCIC) in Paul St, Taunton.

The show was completely SOLD OUT!

This 1st Heat was MC’d by the totally awesome Noel Brodie who is based in Torquay.

Genius book Noel for lots of our Somerset Shows. He is a delight to work with and is brilliant and hilariously funny!

Trish briefed the acts in the green room before the show. To help put them at ease and remind them to relax and try and enjoy the experience. A joy to explain how lovely the audience is at these gigs.

First up was Andrew Costello – A mountain of a man! An ex cage-fighter and someone who had lived for a while at her Majesty’s pleasure! Some interesting prison material…a lot to build upon. Andrew has not gigged much before but we would encourage him to keep going. It takes a lot of guts to get up on stage and open your soul!

Second to the stage was Julie-Ann Amos – A much gentler approach. Clever writing, easier to relate too I guess. Titanium knees and a German husband…Comedy gold!

Next up was Heather Bryson-Banks – A blonde bombshell in every respect. Very confident. Completely unafraid. Pretty full on material and I don’t mean the cherries on her dress!

Closing the first section of the show was Alex Perkes – A friendly young man who got quite a few laughter breaks. Some good punchlines too.

Opening the second section was Kris Davies – Kris took to the stage with his guitar – I wish I had made better notes on his act, however, not my fault. A veritable assault on my funny bones! All I wrote down was Asthma, Welsh, Recycling Gestapo and dead cat!

Next up was Sallyann Fellowes – A lady in red from London – Fab material about resuscitation and the lack of limbs on the model they were taught to practice on!

Our penultimate act…. Our MC was so pleased with himself for using the word penultimate! (You had to be there!) Ben Milden – Very clever material, likeable and edgy!

Finally, Robert Perry took to the stage – did the first couple of minutes in broken French! Then he proceeded to drag a flip chart onto the stage and delivered some very clever jokes. He even dragged an unsuspecting member of the audience onto the stage and got him lay down on the floor! Much to the amusement of the poor victims’ friends in the audience!

While the score sheets were gathered in and the scores added up the wonderful Laura Lexx took to the stage as our headline act!

Laura was born in Norton Fitzwarren so was on her home turf and some of her family were in the audience too. Laura was on BBC’s Live at The Apollo at Christmas. She is one of the hardest working comedians I have the pleasure to know. Her Edinburgh Shows always get fantastic reviews, her blogs are fantastic, and she has also just secured a book deal too!  If she doesn’t get her own TV show I will eat something disgusting… lettuce!

Laura left the stage to rapturous applause and the results were announced…..

Julie-Ann Amos was awarded a WILDCARD in 4th place – If we have space in the final in July then Julie-Ann will be invited back!

In 3rd place was Ben Milden

In 2nd place was Robert Perry and our very worthy winner was Kris Davies!

Huge congratulations to Kris!

Massive thanks to our hosts at CICCIC, our sponsors Berry’s Coaches and Taunton Cider.

Finally, our thanks and love to our audience! You are fabulous! You’re also great judges too!
